Understanding Flow: The Sweet Spot of Performance

Flow, a psychological state characterized by complete absorption in an activity, is often described as being “in the zone.” During flow, individuals experience many different sensations. First they feel complete immersion. Their attention is fully focused on the present moment, eliminating distractions and self-consciousness. Flow also creates space for effortless action, where movements feel smooth and coordinated and require minimal conscious effort.

Oftentimes in flowstate people will feel time distortion, where their sense of time passing fades, with participants often reporting feeling like they “lost track of time.” The biggest differentiator of flow state and other healing practices, is a sense of control, where Individuals feel a sense of mastery and control over their actions, fostering confidence and enjoyment.

Research suggests that achieving flow state offers numerous benefits, including: (1) Enhanced creativity and problem-solving: Flow activates brain regions associated with creativity and cognitive flexibility. (2) Reduced stress and anxiety: The focused state of mind associated with flow helps individuals detach from worries and anxieties. (3) Increased motivation and engagement: The intrinsic satisfaction derived from flow fosters a desire to continue the activity.

Dance as a Gateway to Flow: The Sircle Approach

While various dance styles can facilitate flow, Sircle offers a unique approach specifically designed to cultivate this state. Sircle emphasizes structured improvisation, combining the benefits of both form and freedom. Contrary to the belief that free-form movement is the sole key to flow, Sircle prioritizes form as a crucial element. This structured approach offers several advantages. By providing a framework for movement, Sircle minimizes the need for constant decision-making, freeing up cognitive resources for deeper engagement with the experience. Repeated practice of specific movements allows the body to “overpower” the brain’s need for constant control, enabling smoother and more effortless movement. Structured improvisation in Sircle allows for gradual progression towards more complex and fluid movement patterns, creating a pathway towards achieving flow.

Marking the Path to Superfluidity

Sircle incorporates a specific technique called marking, where each movement is practiced in isolation before being integrated into a sequence. This deliberate approach enhances Mind-Body Connection as marking fosters a deeper understanding of individual movements, facilitating a stronger connection between the mind and body. By repeatedly marking movements, the brain and body establish “markers” that guide the flow of movement, leading to a state of “superfluidity” – a higher level of flow characterized by effortless and seemingly automatic movement.
